If you live in an older home and the time has come to remodel its small bathroom, then there are many things you can do to maximize the space. Even if it is impossible to make the bathroom physically larger, there are plenty of simple things that can be done to make the room appear bigger.

The following are tips for remodeling a small residential bathroom to maximize its space. Use these tips to help get you started planning your new bathroom:

Install a Pedestal or Wall-Hanging Sink

The cabinet under a bathroom sink typically contains items that can easily be stored in the medicine cabinet or linen closet. For this reason, many people wouldn't really miss it if the cabinet were removed.

In a small bathroom, you can install a wall-hanging sink or a pedestal sink to free up floor space. Even though the sink itself still takes up some space, just being able to see more of the flooring gives the illusion of a bigger room.

Utilize Interior Wall Space for a Recessed Medicine Cabinet and Shower Niche

Even in the tiniest of bathrooms, you still need a place to keep all of the health and beauty products you use every day.

To create additional storage space seemingly out of thin air, you can utilize the space between two wall studs to install a recessed medicine cabinet and shower niche. The recessed medicine cabinet will give you a place to store your toothbrush, medications, and makeup while keeping your sink free of clutter.

The recessed shower niche will give you a place to put your soap, shampoo, and conditioner where they won't be hanging in your way or constantly getting knocked over.

Replace the Shower Curtain with Clear Glass Doors

If you live in a home with a tub/shower combination with a shower curtain, you can make the bathroom look a lot larger by replacing it with clear glass doors.

Clear shower doors are timeless and always look great. They also allow your eye to pass through them to the shower surround which makes the bathroom look larger.

Create the Illusion of a Bigger Space

One of the easiest ways to make your bathroom appear larger is to use some common illusion techniques.

Some examples include:

  • installing large mirrors
  • installing ample lighting
  • applying a light-colored, high-gloss paint

Finally, you should skip the wallpaper and dark-colored paint in a small bathroom because both will make the space feel like a small cavern. Instead, opt for all white if you want to maximize the illusion of space.
